I received my bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas. I began my teaching career in a special education classroom here at Bradley during the 1973-74 school year and then taught second grade for the next three years. I returned to Bradley and began teaching kindergarten in the fall of 1988. Kindergarten provides so many positive teaching experiences. Children are happy to be at school and eager to learn. They are easily and frequently delighted by the things we do in the classroom. Learning is fun and kindergartners show that it is! While kindergarten students enter school at many different levels of developmental readiness, they all make worlds of progress throughout the year. I am always amazed and rewarded by watching this growth. It is easy at the kindergarten level to embrace all of the different learning styles. My classroom offers a variety of learning methods to accommodate the many styles and developmental levels. Kindergarten students have such a large capacity for learning. I try to enrich each lesson and am often surprised by how much can be understood and remembered at this age. As well as teaching basic skills, I believe my main job is to make kindergartners ready to learn. My emphasis is on teaching students thinking and listening skills; how to follow directions and stay on task. With these skills students are prepared to be successful learners and responsible students throughout their school careers and lives. | |
